Scanning Mac OSX

Before you begin, make sure your scanner is properly installed and turned on.

1. Open Image Capture by clicking on Applications, then Image Capture.

2.  When Image Capture opens, you need to select the scanner you wish to use from the list of available hardware in the left hand pane. Image Capture will then perform an Overview scan.

3. At the moment our scanner has no document in it. Place the image you wish to scan in the machine and press Overview to update the preview image.

4. The right hand pane of Image Capture presents us with several options for our scan. Choose Color in the Kind drop-down menu.

5. In the next section down, Choose 300 DPI or more as the Resolution of the image we want to capture.

6. The next section of the pane contains a field where we can Name the resultant file, and drop-down menus to select its Scan To destination on your hard drive and set the Format to JPEG.

7. Image Capture also allows us to choose a specific area of the document to scan by using a selection bounding box overlaid on the Overview image. Simply grab the round handles to set to your desired area around the entire photograph.

8. When you have tweaked the controls in the right hand pane of Image Capture to your desired settings, press Scan at the bottom right of the interface to commence scanning the document. The resulting digital file will appear at your chosen location.

Tips For Taking a Good Digital Picture of Your Photos

While scanning is recomended, a good digital picture will work too. Here are a few guide lines when taking a digital picture of  your photographs.

1. Use the highest megapixel digital camera that you have acess too. I recommend  8 megapixels and up. (not a cell phone camera)

2. Use bright, indirect lighting. Sun light is best.

3. Turn off your flash. Any direct, bright lights will cause glare. Also, be careful that lamps and overhead lights in the room are not showing glare on the photo.

4. Line up the photo squarely in your view finder. Photos that are submitted to me that are taken at an angle can't be use. The best way to get a perfectly square shot is to put the photo on the floor and stand directly above it, shooting down. If you background is very dark, you may want to put white paper behind the photo.

5. Leave some room around the photo for cropping later. The easiest way to get a great picture of your photo is to go ahead and leave some space around it when you take the shot. Use the sides of your view-finder to help you judge if your layout is squarely placed in the photo. I can crop out the background later with photo editing software.
